My First Experience With Cross-Training

When I started running for college, I knew that injury was inevitable. It was only a matter of time before some part of my body would break down. I had no idea that it would happen this soon, though. Fortunately, it's nothing serious, like a stress fracture. I'm trying to get over tendinitis in my achilles. It's been bothering me for almost a month. I got on anti-inflammatory medication, and I was doing all I could do before and after my runs to treat it. But it kept getting worse. My trainer decided that I just needed to take a few days off of running so it would heal, and I started a dose pack.
Wednesday afternoon, I started cross-training for the first time. I rode on a stationary bike for 45 minutes. It was not fun at all. My quads were killing me, and all I wanted to do was run. Thursday afternoon I swam laps for 45 minutes and found out that I suck at swimming! I do want to get better at it, though, because I would love to do a triathalon in the future (Damie, I may need some help whenever that happens!). Friday morning I aqua-jogged and had a great workout. I would have rather been running, but this was definitely better than biking and swimming. I had to bike again yesterday afternoon...MISERABLE!
Even though I hate not running, I want my foot to heal completely so that I can have a great outdoor season! I hate that I'm injured, but I'm so thankful that it's not too serious. Hopefully this cross-training will keep me in shape (I can already tell my quads are getting stronger from biking). The plan is to start running again Wednesday morning.
I came home yesterday!! I haven't been home in over 2 months. It is so great to be home and with my family! My mom fixed my favorite meal last night, and I know my dad is going to go over the top with food all next week, which means I better cross-train extra hard to burn off all those calories!

What a bummer to have an injury! I think you are being ultra smart with the cross training and time off to keep this from being a chronic issue. We will definitely have to do some biking and swimming together! I know it never replaces running, especially when you are injured, but if you can continue to look hard and see the benefit in working different muscle groups and challenging your body in a different way, it may even enhance your running. I can't wait to see you run! it is coming up so soon...I have it marked on my calendar!
